Types of Dental Fillings

If you have a cavity that requires a dental filling, there are several different types of materials that can be used to complete the task. Amalgam, gold, porcelain, and composite are some of the most commonly used filling materials. In today's post, our Montreal dentists explain the differences between them to help you decide which might be better for you.

Teeth fillings can be composed of different materials such as amalgam, porcelain, gold, and composite resins. Despite being safe and durable, each material has its own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Composite Fillings

If you need a filling for your teeth, composite fillings are a great option. These fillings are made of plastic that is the same color as your natural teeth, so they blend in perfectly with your smile. They also feel and look natural in your mouth. Your dentist can easily shape and mold the filling onto your tooth, and since it bonds naturally, your dentist won't need to remove as much of your existing enamel during the preparation process.

To place a composite filling, your dentist will first remove any decay from your tooth and apply bonding material to the cavity. Then, they will pour thin layers of composite resin into the hole and use a curing light to harden each layer. Once the final layer has hardened, your dentist will shape the filling so that it matches the shape of your other teeth.

Porcelain Fillings

A dental restoration that is both strong and tooth-colored can be achieved through the combination of hard porcelain fillings and metal. The porcelain filling is crafted in a dental laboratory and then securely cemented into place by your dentist during a series of two appointments.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings, which have a silver hue, are commonly used to fill teeth at the mouth's rear. These fillings consist of a blend of metals, such as mercury, silver, copper, and tin, among others. Although their silver tone may not be attractive to those who prefer a more organic appearance, they are a durable alternative for molars that are exposed to a lot of pressure and strain.

Gold Fillings

To produce a cast gold filling, a replica of your tooth needs to be made. A blend of gold, silver, and copper is mixed to create the filling. This dental filling is similar to porcelain fillings as it is crafted in a lab and then fitted by your dentist. Typically, at least two dental appointments are necessary to complete this process.
